There has been a lot of talk and speculation about a new bracelet event on the WSOP docket this year, dubbed ‘The Super Colossus.’ It is the first event in WSOP history to be offered at a price point of $565 buy-in. What this will effectively do is ensure that pretty much everybody and their brother and their cousin and their wife’s cousin’s roommate will take a shot at it. Apparently the Guinness Book of World Records will be present as this will set the record for most players in a single poker event. All estimates call for somewhere in the 15,000-20,000 player range and I would not be terribly surprised if it reaches over 20k. There is a $5-million guaranteed purse, but obviously if they get 20k entrants that number will be eclipsed.
While this event will amount to what I refer to as a ‘lottery ticket’ in my books, there is also quite a bit of equity in it, mainly because you can buy in up to 4 times. Obviously this gives you 4 times the chance to make the money but it will also change tournament strategy for many players. You will probably see a large amount of guys who are playing fast and loose in an attempt to chip up since they know that if they bust out, they will buy back in for the next flight. There are 4 starting flights for this event: May 29th at 10am, May 29th at 6pm, and the same on the 30th. So there will be incentive for players who are planning on buying back in anyway, to either chip up or bust out before the next flight time. Of course, this will also create a lot of land mines for those players who are only taking one shot at it.
Either way, this should be a fun and interesting tournament, the first of it’s kind for the WSOP. I plan on playing, but I also plan on preregistering, as there is no way I want to stand in line to pay my entry fee for that event! It is a little bit of a pain in the ass to preregister, as you must pay with either a bank wire transfer or a cashier’s check, but to me, it beats standing in line for 2-3 hours any day! Good luck, see you at the WSOP Super Colossus!
